Simplifying WhatsApp Setup

However, with the new MCP server, AI agents can handle much of the setup directly, including phone number onboarding, message templates, webhooks, and test messages.
Connecting Coding Agents with WhatsApp
To use the new feature, a developer can connect the MCP server to an agent like Claude or Codex, sign in with their Meta account, and choose which businesses the agent can access. The agent can then handle the steps needed to add a phone number and set up the WhatsApp account, including verifying the number with a one-time code sent by Meta.

WhatsApp has a rule that requires businesses to use approved message templates when contacting customers outside of a 24-hour customer service window. The agent can also configure webhooks to handle incoming messages and other events, such as sending messages to a customer-support platform or order-management system. Additionally, the agent can inspect the account and change settings as needed, with all actions recorded and requiring authenticated access.

The new WhatsApp Business Tools MCP server is a more specific tool than Meta’s existing Developer Tools MCP, which works across the entire Meta developer platform. While there is some overlap between the two, they operate at different levels, with the new server focused specifically on WhatsApp Business accounts.
