
Perplexity has launched its Portable Computer for Windows PCs with NVIDIA RTX GPUs, enabling users to run a local AI agent on their machines. The application combines orchestration, tools, and a sandbox into a single interface, facilitating tasks like tool calling and file processing.
High system requirements limit accessibility
Although the app is available on Windows, Linux, and Apple silicon, it requires an NVIDIA GPU with at least 24GB of VRAM. This specification may exclude many users, as such hardware is uncommon in standard PCs.
The Windows version supports PPLX 27B and Qwen 3.8 27B, optimized for RTX GPUs. It includes a built-in browser and Perplexity’s SPACE sandbox, allowing the agent to manage multistep tasks autonomously.
Hybrid architecture balances local and cloud processing
Perplexity’s approach differs from tools like LM Studio or Ollama, which focus on local model execution but lack advanced agent features. Its hybrid architecture enables the agent to offload tasks to cloud models when local resources are inadequate, though it requires user approval before sending data externally.
This design benefits organizations handling sensitive data by reducing reliance on external servers for basic processing. Locally completed tasks also do not deduct Perplexity Computer credits, offering cost savings.
The agent’s ability to interact with both local files and remote APIs introduces resource management challenges. Perplexity’s connectors for services like Microsoft Outlook, Google Drive, and Slack help streamline this process. They have also tailored the model runtime, security, and hardware integration for each platform while ensuring a consistent user experience.
Enterprise adoption remains the key challenge
Portable Computer is available with Perplexity Pro ($20/month) and Max ($200/month) plans, with Nvidia DGX Station compatibility coming later. The primary hurdle lies in transitioning local agents from developer projects to enterprise solutions.
Integration with Windows grants Perplexity access to a vast user base, potentially accelerating adoption. However, the high hardware requirements may hinder uptake, particularly among smaller organizations or individuals.
The success of Portable Computer will depend on how effectively it addresses enterprise needs while overcoming hardware barriers.
