Apple’s next flagship phone could bring battery life that rivals some of the best Android devices on the market, even with a smaller battery inside.

The iPhone 18 Pro Max, expected later this year, is rumored to pack a 5,567mAh battery — the largest non-silicon carbon cell available in a U.S. phone, according to leaks. That’s still smaller than the 7,300mAh silicon-carbon battery found in the OnePlus 15, but early estimates suggest the gap in real-world usage might be much smaller.

How a smaller battery could match the biggest ones

The key claim comes from leaker Ice Universe, who said the iPhone 18 Pro Max can “reasonably be estimated to be on the level of a 7,000mAh Android flagship” in terms of battery life. That kind of performance would depend on several factors working together: the expected efficiency gains from the A20 Pro chip, a new thermal design, and what he described as iOS’s “excellent system scheduling and background management.”

Silicon-carbon batteries have become a major selling point for Android flagship phones this year. Phones like the HONOR Magic 8 Pro, the OPPO Find X9 Pro, and the OnePlus 15 routinely deliver two days of heavy use.

They achieve this by packing more energy into the same physical space. The tech giant has not adopted that chemistry, instead sticking with traditional lithium-ion cells. But its tight integration of hardware and software has historically let it squeeze more runtime out of smaller batteries than its competitors.

For people who carry a phone all day and forget their charger, this matters. A device that can comfortably last two days without topping up removes a constant background anxiety. It also means less wear on the battery over time, since fewer charge cycles are needed.

If the firm can deliver that experience with a physically smaller cell, it would validate its approach of optimizing every layer of the system rather than just adding more milliampere-hours.

The iPhone 17 Pro Max already proved the concept

There’s evidence that the company may already be close to this goal. A battery test conducted by YouTuber Lover of Tech compared the iPhone 17 Pro Max against the HONOR Magic 8 Pro and the Pixel 10 Pro XL. That handset lasted only 26 minutes less than the Magic 8 Pro, which has a 7,100mAh battery. Notably, the test used the UK version of the iPhone, which has a slightly smaller battery than the U.S. model.

The ‘Pro Max’ line has always been the company’s battery champion, but nothing since the iPhone 13 Pro Max has matched that phone’s reputation as a genuine two-day device for heavy users. The iPhone 13 Pro Max set a high bar that later models struggled to clear. The question now is whether the upcoming handset can finally get back to that level — or surpass it.

If the leaker’s estimates hold up, the device would achieve parity with the best Android phones using that battery technology despite a battery that is roughly 25% smaller by capacity. That would be a significant engineering feat, driven more by chip efficiency and software management than by raw battery size.

What the rumors suggest about Apple’s strategy

The tech giant has not commented on any of these claims, and it rarely discusses unannounced products. The information comes from supply chain leaks and analysts who track component orders. That source has a mixed track record but has been correct on several of the company’s hardware details in the past.

The shift toward better thermal management in the iPhone 18 series could also play a role.

Heat is one of the biggest enemies of battery efficiency.

A new cooling system would help the A20 Pro maintain peak performance without throttling. Combined with iOS’s aggressive background app management, the phone could deliver consistent runtime across a full day of mixed use.

None of this is confirmed until the company announces the product, typically in September. But the pattern of rumors points to a clear priority: closing the gap with Android rivals on endurance without switching to that chemistry. If it pulls this off, the handset could become the benchmark for efficiency in the smartphone market.
