Microsoft’s upcoming cloud‑native PostgreSQL alternative, HorizonDB, remains in public preview, prompting enterprises to weigh the risk of waiting against the appeal of tighter Azure integration for AI workloads.

What HorizonDB promises

At the Ignite conference in November 2025, Microsoft described HorizonDB as built on a disaggregated compute‑storage model and a “database‑as‑log” architecture. The service is billed as offering native vector search and deep ties to the company’s Foundry and Fabric platforms, positioning it as a specialized option for AI‑heavy applications.

In theory, the design should let developers run large‑scale embeddings and model interactions without the overhead of traditional PostgreSQL extensions. Microsoft claims the platform can achieve up to three times the throughput of open‑source PostgreSQL, though it stops short of directly comparing performance with rivals such as Amazon Aurora or Google AlloyDB.

Enterprise concerns

Independent cloud consultant David Linthicum warned that most enterprises with pressing needs “will not wait.” A prolonged preview period creates uncertainty around service level agreements, pricing, operational maturity, and roadmap confidence. Stephanie Walter of Hyperframe Research echoed the sentiment, noting that organizations cannot base mission‑critical production plans on an undefined general availability date, regional footprint, or support commitment.

Michael Ni, a principal analyst at Constellation Research, added that once a database becomes a “sticky control point” linked to analytics, AI, and governance layers, switching it out turns into a full‑scale business transformation rather than a simple infrastructure swap. The potential for “huge egress fees” if a migration occurs was highlighted by Bradley Shimmin of The Futurum Group, who expects most firms to limit HorizonDB to experimental projects for now.

Performance questions also linger. Igor Ikonnikov of Info‑Tech Research Group said that while a higher compute benchmark sounds attractive, the overall cost could rise once resilience and ecosystem expenses are factored in. Advait Patel, a senior site reliability engineer at Broadcom, pointed out that HorizonDB currently relies on provisioned compute instead of a serverless, scale‑to‑zero model, meaning customers keep paying for resources even during idle periods.

Timeline and market context

Microsoft has not set a firm launch date. Shireesh Thota, corporate vice president for Azure Databases, said general availability is “currently targeted for the second half of 2026.” This places the expected release roughly four months after the company’s FabCon and Ignite events, a span that many AI projects consider lengthy.

Competitors have already established production‑ready PostgreSQL services. Amazon Aurora PostgreSQL has been generally available since 2017 and now includes vector search and integration with Amazon Bedrock. Google’s AlloyDB, launched in 2022, offers similar AI‑oriented features. Databricks’ Lakebase and Snowflake Postgres both reached general availability this year, providing enterprises with a range of mature options.

Given the head start of these rivals, the decision to adopt HorizonDB may rest on how much weight organizations place on Azure‑centric integration versus immediate availability. For some, the promise of a tightly woven AI ecosystem could justify the wait; for others, the risk of uncertain pricing, support, and performance may push them toward existing services.
