
Samsung is shifting its production focus to favor its upcoming passport-shaped Galaxy Z Fold 8, prioritizing this wide-display model over its Ultra and Flip variants. According to a recent supply chain report, the tech giant has adjusted its component orders for the next-gen devices, planning to produce 2.8 million units of the wide-foldable. This figure places the new Fold 8 above both the Ultra and Flip models, which target 2 million and 1.5 million units respectively.
Samsung’s production bet centers on a fresh 4:3 aspect ratio, a shape that mimics a small notebook or passport. The device features a 7.6-inch external display and a 5.4-inch internal workspace when closed. This shorter, wider geometry directly addresses user complaints about the tall, cramped “remote control” outer screens found on older iterations. The pivot, reported by Korean outlet ETnews, marks a swift departure from initial corporate plans that split assembly lines evenly between the Wide and Ultra models.
Industry analysts view this move as a preemptive strike against Apple, which is expected to enter the foldable arena this autumn with a similarly proportioned device, widely rumored to be the iPhone Ultra. By securing a lead in this specific form factor, Samsung aims to set the standard for how consumers interact with large-scale foldable screens.

Titanium Reinforcements and Structural Design
The upcoming July 22 Galaxy Unpacked event will also showcase a massive durability upgrade called Flex Titanium display technology. To combat the screen crease, Samsung is ditching traditional internal polymer layers for a stiff titanium-alloy film. This upgrade will reportedly result in the glass folding from sagging over the hinge. The framework sits on top of a micro-perforated titanium plate that flexes seamlessly without cracking, reinforcing the panel from underneath to minimize the visible dip.
While Samsung is reinforcing the screen from below, Apple appears to be taking a different engineering approach. The iPhone maker is reportedly relying on custom Ultra-Thin Glass that is chemically shaved to be thinner at the hinge crease and thicker at the edges for rigidity. Additionally, Apple will use 3D-printed hinges with fewer moving parts and a specialized expanding adhesive to mask any physical dips when the panel opens.
Should the market respond favorably to the 4:3 form factor, it could fundamentally reshape the industry. If consumers adopt the wider screen, the current “remote control” shape may become obsolete, forcing competitors to rapidly redesign their product lines to match the new standard. This could create a significant bottleneck for companies trying to adapt their existing supply chains to a completely different physical design.
