Lessons Learned from Years with Equipment

What are Modems, Routers, and Combos?

To be able to get your home computer or mobile devices connected to the internet, you will need a modem and a router which are its two major components. With a modem you can communicate with your internet service provider. A cable modem connects to your cable provider through a coaxial cable. A DSL modem is connected to your telephone line. Your modem will necessarily depend on the ISP’s infrastructure capability. Fiber of satellite could be the medium used.

A router makes it possible to share internet connection with other devices in your home or office. If you have a wireless router, you can create a Wi-Fi network that devices can connect to. Sometime routers have ports for Ethernet cables. The router connects devices to the internet through the modem. The router is the recipient and owner of a single IP address on the internet which servers on the net can connect to.

Routers have firewalls that protect them against the internet. With the router firewall, it gives protection in hardware format, in addition to the software firewall found in your computer.

A combination of both router and modem are combined in one piece of equipment with ADSL devices.

There are only a few cosmetic differences with modem-router combos but all brands basically work the same way.

You can choose from many different types of modem-router combos with prices varying from less than fifty dollars to those over a hundred.

The DOCSIS 3.0 is the latest format for the standard modem for cable, if your service provider provides internet through cable network. If it is a DSL connection, you would go for a VDSL connection for speeds greater than 15 Mbps, and an ADSL connection for lesser speeds.

There is no difficulty in choosing a router. Routers use two types of technology. There is a beam forming technology for fast AC which directs a beam at your device as compared to the radius wifi technology. New and old devices work well on this technology. Speeds can range from 100 Mbsp to 5300 Mbps.

A modem router bought on your own is much better than the low renal you pay for the modem router provided by your service provider. Simply spend a few hundred dollars more and you get a big difference in internet speed.

It is much better to buy a modem router combo than getting a separate modem and router. In this modem router combo you can use different brands together, and to get the most of it you should get all the features of the best modem and the best router for your system.
